What does it involve?
Coming along for a sexual health check up is nothing to be worried about; when you arrive at City Clinic you will be asked to fill out a form to register with the sexual health service. Then you will be called through initially to have a chat with a nurse or doctor who will take your medical history and talk further with you about any concerns you may have; either a nurse or a doctor will then carry out an examination and take some swabs. During your visit it is likely that the following will happen:
If you are female:
- The doctor will then ask you to step behind a screen and remove your clothing from your waist down and lie down on the couch. The doctor, helped by a health care assistant will then do a quick examination and take some swabs from you; you will then be left to put your clothes back on.
- The health care assistant will take a blood sample from your arm to be sent away for analysis.
If you are male:
- The doctor will then ask you to step behind a screen and loosen your clothing from your waist down and lie down on the couch. The doctor, helped by a health care assistant will then do a quick examination and take a swab from you; you will then be left to put your clothes back on.
- After you’ve had the swab taken you will be asked to provide a urine sample, you must have held your urine for at least an hour and a half before your consultation.
- The health care assistant will take a blood sample from your arm to be sent away for analysis.
If you are concerned about any of the procedures do talk to the staff at the clinic.
