Syphilis is a serious, but treatable infection; it can be passed during sexual intercourse but also from mother to baby. A syphilis infection has 2 distinct stages, and if left untreated a third ‘latent’ stage, in this latent stage damage to the heart, joints and nervous system can occur.
Syphilis affects men and women in similar ways, initially sores or ulcers will develop on the inside or outside of the body, these are very infectious. In the second stage a generalised rash often appears which affects the palms and soles of the feet; flu-like symptoms and hair loss are also seen.
Syphilis can be caught through skin to skin contact, sexual activity and passed from mother to baby. Syphilis can be avoided by ensuring that any sexual contact incorporates the use of a condom.
Treatment for syphilis involves a long course of antibiotics, however if damage to the heart, joints or nervous system has occurred it may be irreversible.
