Thrush
Thrust is a common condition which can be, but is not always, transmitted through sexual activity. Thrush is caused by yeast, which is normally kept at a steady level, however if conditions change it can multiply and the symptoms of thrush can occur.
Thrush can affect both men and women and symptoms differ, for women symptoms may include:
- Irritation, soreness or redness around the vagina or anus.
- Thick discharge
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Pain passing urine
For men:
- Irritation, soreness or redness around foreskin or on the tip of the penis.
- Thick discharge from the penis
- Difficulty in pulling back the foreskin
- Pain passing urine
You can reduce your chances of getting thrush by:
- Using condoms for sexual activity
- Ensuring good personal hygiene and not over-using deodorants/toiletries in sensitive areas.
If you suspect you have thrush there are a variety of creams, pessaries and tablets available; many are available from your chemist without the need for a prescription.
